Introducing Sabrina Locovare
I recently had the opportunity to sit down with the newest member of the Fitness Incentive Pilates instructor team, Sabrina Locovare. Sabrina currently teaches mat Pilates at Fitness Incentive Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4:00 pm. She is presently doing Reformer Teacher training and will soon be joining the Reformer training staff as well!
Welcome Sabrina!
DV: Hi, Sabrina! You and I know each other well. The purpose of my interviewing you is to introduce you to the members and fellow staff at Fitness Incentive, so tell us a little bit about yourself and your fitness journey.
SL: Well, as you know, My name is Sabrina. I am 41, happily married since 2007, and the mother of the three most amazing humans on this planet. My dream growing up was to be a mom, and I always wanted 3, but at first, the universe made that a little difficult. I was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease as a teenager. After I had my second baby in 2010, I was diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis and psoriasis—unfortunately, that required medication which prevented me from having another baby. I was always into fitness and knew the only way to live with such a debilitating disease was to keep moving and be as healthy as possible. Since I had two young kids, I needed a gym where I could bring them, and the second I stepped into Fitness Incentive, I knew this would be my new happy place. I’ve been a member since, and I have to say it really changed my life. Between the amazing classes with the most motivating instructors, to the friends I made throughout the years, I felt at home every time I stepped through the doors. By 2019 my Crohn’s and arthritis were in remission!
My husband and I decided to try for a third, and our wish came true. I am so grateful for my life. It is the life I dreamed about since I was a little girl.
DV: How did you first get started with Pilates?
SL: After giving birth to my 3rd in 2020, my arthritis and psoriasis flared, and I had to go back on the meds. My arthritis was so bad I was walking with a cane. Knowing I had previously succeeded in going into remission, I knew I would be able to get there again. I slowly added in low-impact workouts, including Pilates, and gradually, my body got stronger.
DV: What made you want to become a Pilates teacher?
SL: Since the day I became a member, Cor and I have had a special bond. She motivated me in class and always kept an eye on me, knowing I had limitations with my body. I would always joke with her about working at the gym since it was the place I felt most at home, and she always said one day, she would love to have me as part of the FI family. There are some things in life you never think are possible, and teaching was something I knew was out of my comfort zone. Cor believed in me and gave me the courage to get certified and start teaching.
My teaching journey brought you, Dina, into my life, and what I have learned from you has been priceless. Not only are you the most incredible mentor, but you are my soul sister and will always have a special place in my heart. I have been teaching at FI since March, and it has been such an amazing experience. I’m so proud of what I accomplished through this journey and am excited for the future. I am in the process of getting my reformer certification. Please keep a lookout for my reformer classes on the app in the coming weeks!
DV: Cor definitely has an instinct and special touch; I know she saw the teaching ability in you, and I am so glad she encouraged you to become a teacher!
I feel the same way about you; it has been my pleasure teaching you and being part of your journey. You are an absolute asset to the team and a wonderful human and instructor. I’m looking forward to seeing you in the Reformer studio in the coming weeks.
What do you want people to know about Pilates?
SL: Pilates is all about connecting the mind and the body and feeling that deep, beautiful burn from the smallest of movements. Once you experience the benefits of Pilates and start really understanding your body and your center, your workouts will never be the same again. Taking everything I learned into the other classes I love, which include step and spin, has been a game changer.
DV: Do you have a “motto” or “words to live by?”
SL: Yes! Always trust the universe. Never doubt yourself. Be consistent, and keep moving forward!
As mentioned above, Sabrina is currently teaching Mat Pilates Tuesdays and Hot Pilates Thursdays, both at 4pm, and as she mentioned, she will soon be teaching reformer privates, partner, and small group sessions.
