Tips for a “Fit-cation”

As a fitness professional, exercising is forever on my mind. Whether it’s choosing a program for a client, choreographing for a group class, or deciding on my own workout. Going on vacation may take me away from my daily routine, but definitely not from my “exercise mindset.” However, exercise should add to your vacation, not take away from it. You choose how you spend your time on vacation, so you can find what works for you without committing to a routine.

Breaking the Routine

As many of us know, routine dictates our lives. However, while on vacation with family and friends, I like the idea of breaking routine and finding a spot in the middle—enjoying time away while still making time to take care of my body.

Many vacation destinations offer on-site fitness classes. Usually, these classes are outside the norm of your traditional style, such as aqua aerobics, water Zumba, aqua cycling (yes, bikes in the pool!), Pilates and yoga on the beach, just to name a few. What better way to spend time with a loved one than to experience something new and different together?

Get Creative

If your vacation destination doesn’t offer any organized fitness classes, make your own fun in the sun with some creativity! Who isn’t up for a competitive game of cornhole or beach volleyball? And to add fun and fitness to these activities, hold a plank while you wait your turn!

Make The Best of Your Travel Time.

Whether on a plane, train, or automobile, sitting/standing/waiting for extended periods is BORING!!! Try utilizing the time and space to your advantage with simple stretches and core work. I recently discovered that, as a passenger in the front seat, I could recline my seat all the way back and get a quick set of sit-ups done. No joke! Just ask my husband, who gets a front-row seat to my fitness creativity while traveling.

And if all else fails, grab a friend, throw her on your back, and sprint down the beach!
