What you’re eating can sabotage all of your hard work in the gym.

Exercise Is Not the Answer!

…Not the Full Answer, Anyway

It seems like every day I am asked, “Cor, why can’t I lose weight?” I respond with a series of questions: What are your eating habits?
Do you take in enough calories to sustain all your activities? Do you eat sugar and processed foods? Are you on medications?

Weight loss, and fitness in general, require more than just exercise!
What you’re eating can sabotage all of your hard work in the gym. Some of the worst fitness sabotaging foods are pasta (yes, even whole grain!), cookies, cakes, cereals, chips, pretzels…Basically, anything in a package that is processed and not fresh. Avoid the crap, and you’re already on your way.

So, Step One Is…

Get processed foods and sugars out of your daily food intake and replace them with fresh, organic veggies and organic, grass-fed, pasture-raised sources of protein and fat. What is commonly referred to as “clean eating.”

Put on Your Chef’s Hat and Cook!

I can’t stress this enough – cook for yourself and your family. If not you, then someone in the household. There’s no better way to know for sure what you’re eating and how it was made than to prepare it yourself. If you can, make meal prep a family event. Make it easier by pre-cooking healthy meals for the week. Make it enjoyable. But however you do it, do it.

When You Eat Also Matters!

I have written in past articles about studies that demonstrate the health benefits of calorie restriction, particularly via intermittent fasting. I personally practice intermittent fasting for at least 16 hours a day, concentrating my consumption into a 6 to 8-hour window, usually afternoon. When I do eat, it’s typically two meals a day – lunch and dinner. The meals I consume are always packed with energy-rich foods – primarily complex carbohydrates and lean organic proteins, and I don’t skimp or calorie count. Ever. I recommend you do the same – try skipping or bumping your breakfast to lunchtime. It allows you to naturally and effortlessly restrict calories and get the benefits of fasting, such as autophagy, a cellular process that clears damaged senescent cells. Fasting may also help control and perhaps even reverse metabolic syndrome. And it’s not as hard as you might think.

Better Food, Better You

If you rid your diet – and thereby your body – of sugars and processed foods, I assure you will see a profound difference. Your energy levels will increase, your body and mind will feel more energetic, and you’ll find yourself able to endure an entire day full of activities without lag and exhaustion. And don’t be surprised when you start to see the fat melt away, too.

Remember, it’s the combination of eating and exercise that will get you into top shape physically, but even just as importantly, mentally. Either is better than neither but combining them is the ticket. It’s not easy, but it is simple. Once you understand that, there’s no other secret but consistency.
