Here comes 2020.
The New Year is almost here, and with it comes many an overzealous resolution, simple though they may sound. Things such as:
· Get fit
· Get back to the gym
· …and lose some weight!
You typically see two types of New Year behavior: Over-eager enthusiasts who jump into their new routines just a little too hard and heavy – and get hurt, or those who hesitate to start because they already have an injury – or injuries – that they feel are holding them back. Whichever you are, and whatever your situation, we can develop and implement an exercise program that is safe, smart, and that will get you where you want to be.
Tips to Reduce Your Risk of Injury in 2020
1. START LOW, PROGRESS SLOW. Ease into it. Then add more over time. What is best for activating muscles that haven’t been used for quite some time is to start slowly, and be realistic with a balanced routine. It’s crucial not to put any unnecessary stress on the body and to build up progressively as you get stronger.
2. REST is part of your routine. The #1 cause for burn out is overcommitting and not allowing your sore muscles to recover until it derails your routine. Your muscles need to rest as they repair from new activities and increased usage.
3. STRETCH. This is important before and after every workout. Stretching keeps the muscles flexible and healthy. Without it the muscles shorten and become tight and weak, making them unable to extend fully. That puts you at risk for joint pain, strains, and muscle damage.
4. GET HELP IF YOU NEED IT. When it comes to your strength, health, and wellbeing, a Personal Trainer can play a significant role in helping you set limits, avoid injury, and progressively challenge you to reach your goals. Having a Personal Trainer when starting or restarting a routine promotes safer practices and builds a stronger commitment to changes through accountability.
Don’t Let An Injury Keep You Sidelined!
If you’re struggling with an existing injury, you may be worried that coming to the gym will worsen it. Or you may simply feel that you need to wait until you are fully healed to start working out again. I have a different opinion, based on the personal experience I had dealing with a potentially sidelining knee injury. I managed to adapt my workouts and stay active throughout my recovery, which helped speed the healing process. So it is possible, even desirable, to stay active while injured, but you have to know how to do it right. Again, this is a situation where having a Personal Trainer is so important. I can assist you in developing a routine that will keep you fit while you recover, and make sure your recovery stays on a fast track.
