I confess I love cycling outside: the air, the breeze, the passersby, the people-watching. But let’s face it, seasons and inclement weather shouldn’t prevent you from a good spin session.

Passing the Time
If you’re like me, the idea of being relegated to the spin, instead of the great outdoors, for my cycling, can be a bit of a slog. So I ask you: What do you do to pass the time on that stationary vehicle?
I confess I love cycling outside: the air, the breeze, the passersby, the people-watching. But let’s face it, seasons and inclement weather shouldn’t prevent you from a good spin session. What are we do to keep our workout going all year (and weather) long?
So, no excuses. First, find a great spin class. And the gym is at no loss for great spin classes. You know the one, with the epic beat and the fab instructor. Or maybe it’s the low-key morning class with the chill vibe. Find your niche, and follow it. Sometimes, knowing your fave class is just there, at the ready, is a great motivator.
Don’t like class so much? Can’t find the right groove? The times don’t work for your schedule? I’m compiling our greatest hits to help you get on that indoor bike, Espresso bike (either upright or recumbent) or one of the spin bikes in the spin room, whatever, to make those legs spin:
Music
So you thought I might say watch a movie or a show? See later on the list. My go-to for a great burn and hyper calorie-burn workout is always going to be 30-40 minutes hard spin to the music of your choice. Whether you’re Mozart, Maroon 5, or Mastodon, you know what gets you going. Do it in style.
TV/Movie
I’m a total proponent of the “I’m bored sitting here, need more,” challenge. Can’t sit there for more than 20? Find your groove in a totally bingeable show. Pro tip: Once you find something you like, make a promise to yourself to not watch that show unless you’re on the bike. Watch how quickly you return to the saddle, couple times a week, guaranteed. I legit got through all of Downton Abby this way. Don’t judge! I love me some BBC.
Chat
Post up on the Espresso bike by the bathrooms and just chat people up as they pass by. Strangers are just friends we haven’t met yet, right? If you’re more of the ‘shy type,’ you will still be very surprised by how many people you know and haven’t seen in a while. It’s a perfect opportunity to catch up. You are exercising both your body and your soul. And who doesn’t love to extra juice for the same squeeze? Only crazy people, that’s who.
Expresso Yourself
And while we’re on the topic of the Espresso bikes… they are totally upgraded. Get this… you can pick a workout and the music beats, pedal strokes and time all match perfectly! Not only that, there are programs that are designed to hit specific heart rate zones. So if you want a nice easy ride, fine. If you want to get your tush whooped, also fine. I mean, there is literally nothing you would have to think about after picking a workout. And while we’re on the topic of music… Bluetooth headset, you say? No problem. You can sync your headset up with the bike and listen to your heart rate based workout play… it even has a coach motivating you along the way. I’m sure I’m missing some other awesome new features, but you’ll go on and discover them for yourself.
Just Do It
You know this one. Sometimes, you just have to start. Working? Get on the indoor bike and check email, send texts, finally contact that relative you’ve been dreading making dinner plans with. Handling mundane tasks while exercising can be really liberating, and no one has to know you’re sweating and maybe also meditating. 😉
